Automobile Camshaft

Automobile Camshaft

The camshaft of an automotive engine is a core component of the engine's valve train. Its rotation controls the opening/closing time, height, and duration of the intake and exhaust valves, ensuring the engine completes intake and exhaust at precise times, guaranteeing smooth power output.

Core Functions
* **Valve Control:** The camshaft cams contact tappets, and their rotation pushes the tappets up and down, thus controlling the opening and closing of the valves. It is the commander of the engine's "gas exchange process."
* **Speed Matching:** The camshaft speed is half the crankshaft speed (in a four-stroke engine, the crankshaft completes one working cycle with two rotations, while the camshaft completes one intake and one exhaust cycle with one rotation), achieving synchronization through gear or chain transmission.

Common Faults and Solutions
* **Abnormal Wear:** Caused by insufficient oil pressure, blocked lubrication channels, excessive bearing cap tightening torque, etc., manifesting as increased clearance between the camshaft and bearing housing, axial displacement, abnormal noise, and even breakage. Solutions include checking for wear and replacing the camshaft if wear is severe; adjusting valve timing; replacing worn bearings and damaged camshafts; inspecting the drive mechanism; keeping engine oil clean; and tightening bearing cap bolts to the specified torque.

Seizing: Often caused by foreign object buildup or damaged crankshaft connecting rod bearings. The solution is to remove foreign objects and inspect and replace damaged crankshaft connecting rod bearings.

Breakage: Commonly caused by untimely oil changes, excessive engine temperature, or overload operation. The solution is to change the oil promptly, lower engine temperature, and perform regular maintenance.

Incorrect Position/Timing Misalignment: May be caused by friction wear or loose parts. The solution is to change to high-quality lubricating oil and tighten the fixing bolts; if the wear is severe and irreparable, replace with a suitable camshaft. Repair should follow the repair manual; if unsure or inexperienced, consult a professional mechanic.

Daily Maintenance Recommendations: Regularly change to high-quality engine oil and oil filter to ensure a smooth lubrication system and reduce wear.

Avoid overloading the engine to prevent damage to components due to excessive temperature or impact loads.

Regularly inspect the camshaft and valve train to promptly identify and address any abnormalities, preventing escalation of the problem.

Proper maintenance can effectively extend the camshaft's lifespan and ensure stable engine operation.
